As much as water is important to us, it can also cause us many problems. This is mainly true when it comes to safeguarding structures and the management of land. Through the years, lots of creative ways have been developed to get water where we want it. Weeping tiles or weeping tile systems are a common method used to discharge groundwater to prevent property damage.

What Is a Weeping Tile?
It is a type of drainage system used to manage groundwater and surface water. The principle is to move water that could threaten a structure and take it to a place where it is harmless.
Four-inch porous pipes are installed underground around the foundation of the basement. Rain water that filters into the ground is collected by these and redirected to the sump pump liner under the basement. This prevents the groundwater from entering the basement.
How Weeping Tiles Work?
• Exterior weeping tile is used to manage water at ground level before it enters the basement. The system comprises of a trench that’s sloped away from the pipe, gravel and the house. The water, after getting soaked into the ground, gets filtered through the gravel, reaches the pipe through the holes on it and gets diverted away from the house.
• The interior weeping tile is installed directly under the basement floor where water is collected in the pipes, moved to a sump pump and then to an exterior storm sewer. Installation of this system is similar to the installation of a sump pump. Usually, a 12-inch wide by 12-inch deep trench will be dug around the basement. The pipe will be placed inside the trench filled with coarse gravel and covered by concrete.
Interior weeping tiles are used when the exterior weeping tile system fails.
When Is a Weeping Tile Needed?
The system can be used for several problems with groundwater and surface water. Let’s see some of the most common uses:
• Protection against foundation damage and wet basements
Hydrostatic pressure can be exerted on the foundation of a home when the soil gets saturated with water. Water can seep into the foundation and also into the basement. This can be relieved and the problems prevented with a weeping tile system.
• Problems with Surface Water
Your home might have a low-lying area on the lawn that gets soggy during rains. There might also be areas where soil erosion occurs. A relatively shallow weeping tile can be used in situations like these. It can be used either to drain away the water or to divert it.
